Styling Tips

You already have a great foundation with our fashionable, high-quality apparel. Now, here’s how to take it to the next level with impeccable, well-tailored style.

GENERAL UNIFORM FIT TIPS

  • Shoulder seams should be centered along the top of the shoulders.
  • To ensure a perfect fit, extend your arms to the ceiling and out in front of you comfortably. The shoulders and sleeves should still look form-fitted. When you pull the shirt forward, the space between your body and the shirt at the mid-section should be no less than two inches and no more than six inches.
  • Pockets shouldn’t be overfilled with items.

UNDERSHIRT FIT TIPS

  • Undershirts must conceal chest hair.
  • Your undershirt color shouldn’t clash with the color of your shirt. If your shirt is white or light colored, wear a white undershirt. If your shirt is black, wear a black undershirt.

COLLAR FIT TIPS

  • Use collar stays to create a crisp, straight collar point and to prevent your collar from wrinkling.
  • For shirts requiring a tie, you should be able to fit a finger between the collar and your neck for a comfortable fit. Generally, the size of the collar is one inch larger than your neck.
  • Without a tie, the top button of the shirt should always be open. All other buttons should be closed.

SLEEVE LENGTH FIT TIPS

  • Your shirt-sleeve length should match the arm extension without bunching at your wrist.
  • Your sleeve cuffs should end at the end of your wrist bone.
  • With your hands at your side, make sure that your cuff is no less than one-quarter inch above the wrist or more than one-half inch below the wrist.

SUIT JACKET FIT TIPS

  • Your suit jacket sleeve should sit at or just below your wrist.
  • Jacket sleeves should end just above the shirt sleeve, allowing only one-quarter inch of the shirt sleeve to be exposed.
  • Rules for buttoning your suit jacket:
    • Top button – always
    • Middle button – sometimes
    • Last button - never

PANT FIT TIPS

  • Your button should close easily.
  • Your front and back pockets should lay flat when standing, without pulling the fabric or showing gaps.
  • Pockets shouldn’t be overfilled with items.
  • Inseam should lie flat, creating a smooth line without puckering.

MEN’S PANT LENGTH FIT TIPS

  • Perfect-length pants should barely break at the top of the shoe and always touch the top of your foot.
  • If your socks are visible or your pants don’t touch the top of your shoe, they’re too short.
  • Your pants should never bunch on the bottom or touch the floor.

WOMEN’S PANT LENGTH FIT TIPS

  • Perfect-length pants should barely break at the top of the shoe and always touch the top of your foot.
  • If your socks are visible or your pants don’t touch the top of your shoe, they’re too short.
  • When wearing heels, your pants should fall between the bottom of your ankle and the top of your shoe. If the hem falls above your ankle, the pants are too short. If it bunches at the bottom, the pants are too long.

GARMENT CARE

  • Be sure to follow the directions on the garment label, which tells you how to properly launder your garment.
  • Wool or wool blend suiting should be dry cleaned only when soiled or stained (typically every 5th or 6th wearing). Dry cleaning garments too often can break down or weaken the fibers. Instead, give the garments a crisp pressing to eliminate wrinkles.
  • Washable suiting should be laundered at home in cold water on the gentle cycle. Dry on low heat and remove when slightly damp. For an even more polished appearance, finish with a steam iron.

FIT

  • Wearing the wrong size not only results in a poor fit, it can also prematurely wear out garments. You can easily avoid this by using our Size Charts to order the correct size. If you have several employees to fit, it’s a great idea to order a Fit Line to make it easier for your employees to try on garments.
